Pilkington United Kingdom Limited has collaborated with the NBS National BIM Library to make its commercial IGU products and Pilkington PlanarTM structural glazing models available online for architects and specifiers.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is designed to improve decision making and make the design and construction of buildings more efficient and more cost-effective, as well as helping to model the performance of a building.

It does this by providing users with detailed information about each building product, such as the dimensions, material properties and energy performance.

Architects and specifiers using the National BIM Library now have full access to comprehensive product information for Pilkington’s high performance solar control and thermal insulation glass products, as well as its structural glazing systems.

This will enable more informed decision making when specifying and integrating products into a building design.

Jason Eggerton, project specification manager at Pilkington, said: “BIM is a government initiative that ensures each building product used within a design is embedded with its own bespoke data. Not only does this make the specification process quicker and easier, it facilitates a fully collaborative approach to construction and can even allow architects to walk clients through a project in a virtual environment before it is built.

“While BIM was initially the domain of government construction projects, we’re now seeing its use increase across the wider construction industry. As the industry evolves it is vital that we keep pace and make Pilkington products BIM-ready. This will not only help our customers to make more informed decisions, but also help them to identify areas for improved efficiencies and cost savings moving forward.”

The NBS National BIM Library is the fastest-growing BIM library in the UK. It is home to an extensive selection of BIM objects that range from building fabric systems to mechanical and electrical objects.

Models are available in both the popular IFC and Revit formats and for more information about Pilkington and BIM, please visit: pilkington.com/en-gb/uk/architects/bim
