Vitro Architectural Glass
Find us on:
Vitro Architectural Glass, North America’s largest and most trusted glass manufacturer, is responsible for many of the commercial glass industry’s most specified products, including high-performance Solarban® low-emissivity glasses, VacuMax™ vacuum insulating glass, Starphire Ultra-Clear® glass and a range of performance-tinted glasses. Vitro is committed to innovation and sustainable manufacturing and end-use, including the development of energy-efficient products and processes. By working closely with customers and partners, Vitro provides expert service and support to ensure that its projects meet or exceed ever-evolving requirements and satisfy demanding sustainability certifications.
Vitro Architectural Glass was the first U.S. glass manufacturer to have its entire collection of architectural glass products recognized by the Cradle to Cradle Certified® Products Program and the first North American manufacturer to publish third-party verified Environmental Products Declarations (EPDs) for flat and processed glass products.
Vitro recently announced it received an updated EPD for flat glass products that indicates its architectural glass products contain just 1,240 kilograms of CO2 equivalent, which is 13% lower than the National Glass Association’s industry standard. Based on these results, all Vitro Architectural Glass products meet the Top 20% ("Most Preferred") LEC material category set in 2024 by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA). This lowest embodied carbon designation applies to all Vitro-produced architectural glass from all Vitro plants, all the time.
However, Vitro's commitment to sustainability transcends certification programs into responsible manufacturing processes and large-scale energy reduction through the use of energy efficient low-emissivity (low-e) glasses. In fact, Solarban® solar control low-e glass and other glasses by Vitro have been installed on hundreds of LEED®-certified buildings, including several of the world’s certified net-zero “living” buildings.

The right glass can be the centerpiece of your design. Combining the color fidelity of Acuity® low‑iron glass with the performance you expect from the Solarban® family of glasses, you can design an ambitious façade—and realize it, on budget and on time. Acuity® glass is available with the full range of Solarban® solar control, low‑e coatings.
Vitro market research indicates the installed cost of a glass and metal curtainwall averages $90 per square foot nationally. Upgrading a standard low‑e coated clear insulating glass unit (IGU) to Solarban® Acuity® glass unit typically will increase the total installed curtainwall cost by only $1-2 per square foot.
Developed based on 30 years of Starphire® glass manufacturing know-how, using proprietary low‑iron materials and processes, Acuity® glass is 60 percent less green than standard "clear" glass. For the ultimate in transparent low‑iron glass, Starphire® glass is 87 percent less green and also can be coated with Solarban® low‑e coatings.
Acuity® low‑iron glass is specially engineered for vision glazings, both as a substrate for Solarban® low‑e coatings and for all lites in an insulated unit or laminated configuration.
All configurations include uncoated Acuity® glass as the interior lite. Available coatings include: Solarban® 60 Glass, Solarban® 65 Glass, Solarban® R67 Glass (formerly Solarban® 67 Glass), Solarban® R77 Glass, Solarban® 72 Glass, Solarban® 90 Glass, Solarban® R100 Glass
Applications:
In addition to office buildings, institutions, hotels and schools, Solarban® Acuity® glass can be specified for exterior applications from luxury condominiums and mixed-use buildings to entrances and storefronts. Solarban® Acuity® glass is also ideal for distinctive exterior applications such as atriums, skylights and spandrel glass.
VacuMax™ vacuum insulating glass (VIG) by Vitro Architectural Glass integrates with any traditional (and even non-traditional) glazing system to maximize insulation performance. With wall-like R-values up to R20, VacuMax™ VIG is the ultimate in thermal glazing.
The newest generation of VacuMax™ VIG is now manufactured exclusively with Solarban® 70 solar-control, low-e glass by Vitro and can be used alone as nominal ¼” glass to replace monolithic (single-pane) glass without needing to replace the framing system. Additionally, a new manufacturing process means the next generation of VacuMax™ VIG units don’t require a vacuum port and feature a getter that’s hidden from view.
A VacuMax™ VIG unit consists of two lites of glass, ranging from 4mm to 6mm, separated by a non-leaded proprietary metal edge seal and a vacuum space. The unit’s slim construction and light weight allows it to be incorporated into virtually any traditional glazing system, window frame or curtainwall application. VacuMax™ VIG units enhance the performance of any glass configuration by effectively blocking thermal transmission, delivering thermal insulation performance that is 3-5x better than conventional insulating glass and up to 20x better than monolithic glass.
Solarban® 65 solar control, low-e glass is designed to offer superior energy efficiency, which can help you provide year-round comfort with heating and cooling cost savings. A modernization of our popular Solarban® 60 glass, Solarban® 65 glass is engineered to meet today’s stricter code standards and sustainability goals while still offering a clear, color-neutral look.
With a solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) of 0.35, Solarban® 65 glass is engineered to block 65% of solar heat energy while also allowing 70% of the visible light to pass through. Solarban® 65 glass is an ideal product choice for designing with high levels of visual clarity while achieving exceptional energy efficiency, as proven by its 0.29 winter nighttime U-value.
In a standard one-inch insulating glass unit (IGU), Solarban® 65 glass offers a crisp, neutral aesthetic. Solarban® 65 glass can be coated on clear glass, Acuity® low-iron glass and Starphire® low-iron glass.
Solarban® 65 solar control low-e glass is a modernization of Vitro’s popular Solarban® 60 glass, shown here on the Calgary Central Library:
Low-emissivity (low-e) glass coatings were developed to minimize the amount of ultraviolet and infrared light that can pass through glass without compromising the amount of visible light that is transmitted. A microscopically thin transparent coating allows low-e glass to reflect exterior heat in warm temperatures and hold in heat during cold temperatures, making buildings light, bright and energy-efficient. Vitro Architectural Glass (formerly PPG glass) offers two types of low-e coated glasses: Solarban® solar control low-e glasses and Sungate® passive low-e glass.
Solarban® 60 glass features a color-neutral appearance that is available on clear glass, Starphire® glass or any Vitro tinted glass for an array of aesthetic choices.
Solarban® 65 glass is engineered to meet today’s stricter code standards and sustainability goals while still offering a clear, color-neutral look.
Solarban® R67 glass combines excellent solar performance with a soft, neutral coating that provides a crisp, clean and brilliantly clear exterior appearance.
Solarban® 70 glass (formerly Solarban® 70XL glass) can help you strike the right balance between form and function. Solarban® 70 glass balances VLT and solar control.
Solarban® 72 glass builds on the advances of Solarban® 70 glass to provide even greater transparency with minimal sacrifice of performance.
Solarban® R77 glass is a neutral-reflective low-e glass with reflectivity higher than that of Solarban® R67 glass but lower than Solarban® R100 glass.
Solarban® 90 glass conveys a neutral appearance similar to clear glass in both color and reflectance.
Solarban® R100 glass is a neutral-reflective low-e glass with an excellent solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) of 0.23 and visible light transmittance (VLT) of 42 percent.
Solarban® 60 Optiblue® glass (formerly Solarban® z50) and Solarban® 70 Optiblue® glass (formerly Solarban® z75) provide a neutral, steel blue-gray appearance, due to the use of Optiblue® glass.
With the Solarban® Acuity® series, you can upgrade from coated clear glass for just a fraction of the total installed façade cost.
Solarban® AviProtek® E glass unites bird-friendly, acid-etched visual patterns by Walker Glass with high-performance Solarban® solar control low‑e coatings.
Only Starphire Ultra‑Clear® glass by Vitro Architectural Glass (formerly PPG Glass) allows views so brilliant, you’ll forget the glass is even there. For interiors, exteriors as well as heavy and safety glass applications in thicknesses up to ¾ inch, no low-iron glass consistently maintains its transparency, color fidelity and vivid beauty like Starphire® glass.

The clearest heavy glass on the market for entrances and storefronts, as well as safety and security glass applications.
Starphire® for Interiors
Bring more light into interior spaces with unmatched levels of brightness, color fidelity, clarity and visual excitement.
Starphire® for Exteriors
Achieve brilliant clarity and true-to-life views of the outdoors that conventional clear glass simply can't match.
Sungate ThermL™ glass is a low-e coating engineered for use on the interior surface of a typical one-inch insulating glass unit (IGU) that dramatically improves U-values when paired with a Solarban® solar control low-e glass by Vitro on the second surface.
Sungate ThermL™ glass is neutral, colorless and provides low reflectivity, so it looks just like uncoated clear glass while offering enhanced durability and insulation.
Sungate ThermL™ glass is engineered to allow for a high rate of visible light transmittance (VLT) and to retain the indoor heated air by slowing down heat transfer through the IGU to reduce winter heating costs. Sungate ThermL™ coatings are as durable and resistant to mechanical abrasion as uncoated glass.
When Sungate ThermL™ glass is paired in a one-inch IGU with a half-inch airspace with argon and Solarban® 70 glass on the second surface, the U-value is 0.19, which is a 21% improvement over using Solarban® 70 glass alone. This pairing provides a VLT of 63% and a solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) of 0.27.
Sungate ThermL™ glass by Vitro is neutral, colorless and provides low reflectivity while offering remarkable thermal performance similar to Solarban® 70 glass by Vitro shown here on the UC San Diego Torrey Pines Living & Learning Community:
