New energy saving glazing technology that delivers high performance windows whilst substantially reducing raw material and labour costs will be launched at Glassex (Stand B32) by silicone solutions company Dow Corning.

WinDowVation is a fast and efficient window bonding solution that enables fabricators to revolutionise the way they assemble IG units.

The system has been developed for the UK in conjunction with Sheerframe window systems company L.B. Plastics. Dow Corning’s Patrice Sauro explains: “Traditionally, window glazing is labour intensive and can cause bottlenecks in the manufacturing process, which reduces efficiency and increases cost. WinDowVation uses a reactive hot melt silicone adhesive to immediately bond the IG unit and the window sash together forming a highly stable unit.

The silicone is applied using precision high-speed robotic machinery in the factory or a hand held glue gun for on-site use. This results in substantial productivity gains in the automated assembly of windows as well as higher performance windows”. In terms of performance, bonding transfers the strength and rigidity of the glass into the window frame – rather like car windscreens, which are bonded to increase the strength of the car body shell. The need for reinforcement in the window is therefore reduced, which improves its thermal performance, while reducing the component cost of the window.

Fabricator productivity is improved by saving the stockholding, handling, cutting and fitting of reinforcement into windows. Productivity is further improved by the removal of the heel-and-toe glazing task on opening casements. Patrice Sauro adds: “Glass bonding is a technology that has been used for several years in the USA and continental Europe. The technology is now available in the UK thanks to the co-operation and investment by leading PVC system supplier L.B. Plastics.

A two-year product development programme has resulted in a Sheerframe window profile that has been developed specifically to maximise the glass bonding technology. “It is the combination of the robotic equipment and a dedicated window profile that provides fabricators with an innovative and comprehensive bonding solution. “In a competitive market, the most successful window fabricators will be those who can positively differentiate their products by embracing the latest innovation”.
