There are many. Really many. And they've got a new home - light, safe and pleasantly cool. We are talking about around one million billions of bytes.

In Munich's "IT-Rathaus", the latest construction stage of the technology park "M-Campus" in the city's east, they will start a completely new life - behind highest-quality glass made by FLACHGLAS Wernberg.

IT insiders and math whizzes know that one million billions add up to one quadrillion. That's a number with 15 noughts. In order to abbreviate it in front of a measuring unit, it is also called "peta". In information technology's gigantic dimensions petabyte is the next escalation level after mega-, giga- and terabyte.

But getting back from these astronomical realms to Munich's east: one petabyte of data is the amount with which Munichs city-owned IT service provider it@M has to cope. And this amount af data now resides in the new IT-Rathaus - for the first time under one single roof. So far the exponentially-growing data family had been scattered throughout numerous servers all over Bavarian's capital - so the data literally have come a long way.

Data in many ways are quite a delicate species. Their wriggling at the speed of light, for example, makes IT environment sweat considerably. That´s why coolness is called for. Another challenge is to prevent even one single bit from ducking or disappearing. That´s why safety technology is called for, as well. FLACHGLAS Wernberg substantially contributed to ensuring both these aspects in the IT-Rathaus.

Approximately 2,500 sqm of thermal and solar insulating glass support a sophisticated system that obviates the need for mechanical ventilation and air conditioning in the new service centre. Integrated safety with alarm loops provide essential data protection.

Apart from these laminated glass systems we also produced approximately 1,000 sqm of DELOGCOLOR® spandrel panels that additionally highlight the new IT-Rathaus´s architectural face. Printed in light grey they foreground the colourful steels slats that lend a barcode-like appearance to the building.

A challange of its own, however, was to simultaneously deliver the parts to two "construction sites" - in time. The insulation glass panes had to be delivered to Hungary since the facade elements were prefabricated there. The spandrel panels, though, had to be delivered directly to the site in Munich. Once more it turned out that with our 360° GlasServices FLACHGLAS Wernberg is perfectly able to meet all kinds of complex challenges. There were neither any complaints regarding the logistics nor our products´quality.
