The long, smooth sheets of glass rolled down lengthy wheeled counters, as workers stripped them of their protective film and used high-powered suction cups to place them in packing containers.
As 30 workers prepared the order, another dozen workers were readying a new piece of equipment to be installed in the massive glass making production facility at the Gateway Business Park here. Site Manager George Smith casually remarked that the specialty glass making facility isn't even at half of its production capability yet.
The $25 million glass manufacturing facility broke ground last June and is rapidly approaching its grand opening target date of May 4. The 200,000-square-foot facility will consist of a two-floor office building taking up 18,000 square feet and a 182,000-square-foot glass processing facility that will ship finished glass in and out of the facility every day.
The office building has a mostly glass front which sits in front of the processing facility facing Straughens Mill Road. A road, named Gateway Boulevard, has already been constructed leading from Straughens Mill Road to the back of the plant. The road will allow trucks to deliver and drop off materials to the site.
