Energy-Saving Glass Using Heat Mirror Suspended Film Technology to Be Produced by Southwall Joint Venture  PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 13, 2009-- Southwall Technologies Inc. (OTCBB:SWTX), the worldwide innovator of energy-saving films and glass products, announced today that it will supply the high performance insulating glass for InnovisionTM Windows, a new line of residential and commercial-grade fiberglass windows introduced last week by Owens Corning, Inc., the world’s leading manufacturer of fiberglass insulation and building materials.

Southwall Insulating Glass, a joint venture company formed by Southwall last year to streamline the production of super-insulating glass incorporating Heat Mirror suspended film technology, will manufacture the glass for Owens Cornings’ newest window family.

Innovision windows’ combination of Heat Mirror insulating glass – honored by Popular Science magazine as one of the top 100 inventions of the millennium – with the industry’s first fully-bonded, slim-line fiberglass frame delivers a lightweight window with maximum strength and durability, a larger glass area, and superior energy efficiency.

“Because fiberglass technology enables the strongest and most energy-efficient frames available, it made perfect sense for Owens Corning to choose Southwall’s Heat Mirror suspended film technology, which enables the most energy-efficient glass available,” said Bruce Lang, president of Southwall Insulating Glass.

Bringing Super-Insulating Glass to Mainstream Green Building

Because glass remains a weak link in saving energy in buildings and homes, the US Department of Energy (DOE) is phasing in more demanding Energy StarTM window performance standards starting in 2010. Just as the window industry made a fundamental shift to low-e coated glass technology in response to the first Energy Star standards, the industry is now making a similar shift to super-insulating, multi-cavity glass technology to reach a new level of energy efficiency. The DOE’s higher performance targets and aggressive implementation timeline have created increased interest in available and proven solutions such as Heat Mirror insulating glass.

“National window brands are demanding more energy-efficient glass to meet increasing energy standards, and Heat Mirror technology promises to be a key enabler for a new generation of lightweight and super-insulating windows,” added Dennis Capovilla, president and CEO of Southwall Technologies. "We are extremely pleased that a strong brand such as Owens Corning is partnering with us to bring the benefits of Heat Mirror technology to a broader audience.”

About Heat Mirror Suspended Film Technology

Heat Mirror glass is a superior multi-cavity solution that suspends one or more low-emissivity and solar-reflective Heat Mirror films inside of an insulating glass unit to create two, three or even four insulating cavities without adding weight. This innovative approach enables window fabricators to offer higher performance glass options for their existing window systems today as well as for next-generation window systems in development. Heat Mirror suspended film technology combines the best of film-based and glass-based technologies to create the industry’s first “super glass” with center-of-glass insulating performance ranging from R-6 to R-20 while minimizing solar heat gain and blocking UV radiation.
