Facility features first ATLAS line for triple-pane IG production in U.S. CARLISLE, Pa., Oct. 30, 2012 – PPG Industries (NYSE: PPG) announced that it is continuing to invest in the PPG Residential IG Service Center in Carlisle, Pa., including installing the first Automated Tri-Lite Assembly System (ATLAS) production line for insulating glass (IG) in the U.S.The PPG Residential IG Service Center in Carlisle, Pa., which manufactures insulating glass (IG) units for use in residential windows and patio doors, operates the first Automated Tri-Lite Assembly System (ATLAS) production line in the U.S. Developed by GED Integrated Solutions, Twinsburg, Ohio, the ATLAS production line helps window manufacturers produce triple-pane IG units more affordably and without reconfiguring existing production lines.

At the Carlisle facility, the ATLAS line enables PPG to produce triple-pane IG units at a significantly faster rate than it could using a traditional IG production line and with better quality control because of the high level of automation. The PPG Residential IG Service Center also makes conventional IG units as well as IG units in irregular shapes, sizes and configurations.

The PPG IG Service Center, formerly located in Allentown, Pa., manufactures IG units for use in residential windows and patio doors. The facility was consolidated at PPG’s Carlisle Works in 2011 to maximize operational efficiencies at the plant, which also produces PPG residential glass products such as SUNCLEAN(R) self-cleaning glass, SOLARBAN(R) solar control, low-emissivity (low-e) glasses and SUNGATE(R) passive, low-e glasses.

As a full-service fabrication facility, the PPG Residential IG Service Center supplements the production capabilities of residential window and patio door manufacturers. With the addition of the ATLAS system, the plant can help customers meet high-volume demand for highly insulating, energy-efficient triple-pane IG units. It also makes conventional IG units as well as IG units in irregular shapes, sizes and configurations.

Developed by GED Integrated Solutions, Twinsburg, Ohio, the ATLAS production line is part of a project initially sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy to help window manufacturers produce triple-pane IG units more affordably and without reconfiguring existing production lines. At the Carlisle facility, the ATLAS line enables PPG to produce triple-pane IG units at a significantly faster rate than it could using a traditional IG production line and with better quality control because of the high level of automation.
