Guardian Industries Corp. announced at the 2006 International Builders’ Show its newest glass innovation, ShowerGuard™, the first and only temperable, permanently protected shower glass.

Designed for residential and commercial use in shower and bath enclosures, ShowerGuard™ glass is easier to clean than standard glass and maintains its original, like-new appearance.

During the manufacturing of ShowerGuard™, the glass surface is sealed through a patented ion beam process. ShowerGuard™ glass resists the corrosion and discoloration caused over time by constant exposure to hard water, soaps and harsh household cleaners. These contaminants cause a chemical reaction that leaves standard glass rough and pitted so that it becomes easily clouded with residue, stain and scale buildup.

“We developed ShowerGuard™ glass in response to overwhelming consumer interest in an easy-to-clean shower glass that stays clear and beautiful over time,” said Patricia Kennedy, marketing director of Guardian’s interior products. “What many people don’t realize is that standard glass is porous and that basic, everyday use can lead to a shower that is almost impossible to clean.”

Homeowners can maintain ShowerGuard™ glass with a soft cloth or wet sponge and most common household cleaners.

ShowerGuard™ glass is demonstrably more durable than other forms of glass protection. Over time, spray-on or wipe-on treatments will wear off and cease to protect the glass. They can require specialty maintenance products, as well as continual re-application. ShowerGuard™ never needs to be reapplied and is backed by a 10-year limited warranty.

The choice is clear: glass shower enclosures

Research shows today’s homeowners want stand-alone showers in addition to tubs in their master bathrooms. They are choosing frameless clear glass enclosures to create the spa-at-home environment as well as to show off the upscale materials and fixtures used in their showers. “Consumers can spend between one thousand and two thousand dollars in their custom shower enclosures,” said Kennedy. “ShowerGuard™ glass can help homeowners protect that investment.”

Because the protective properties are created during manufacturing, the surface of ShowerGuard™ glass is protected before it is tempered and therefore does not require any extra work for the fabricator or shower enclosure manufacturer. “ShowerGuard™ eliminates the complexity and added burden of applying glass protection at the factory or of reapplying it in the consumer’s home,” said Kennedy.
