The Importance of Health Product Declarations®
HPD® documents provide a comprehensive list of a product’s ingredients and their associated effects on human health. They are prepared based on the Health Product Declaration® (HPD®) Collaborative’s open standards. HPD® documentation is used by architects and other building professionals to make informed choices when selecting building materials. This promotes transparency and consideration of human health within the built environment as a result.
The first declaration covers Walker Textures® full surface and patterned acid-etched glass. Walker’s second HPD® is dedicated to AviProtek® bird safe glass. Walker is the first company in the North American market to offer HPD certifications for its line of full surface, pattern etched and bird friendly solutions.
The declarations are third-party verified by Vertima, experts in sustainable and LEED® certified building practices.
Building for a Sustainable Future
“Walker Glass is committed to supporting appropriate and effective sustainable design practices. We recognize that architects, designers, building owners and specifiers need to make informed selection decisions with independently verified environmental data on our products,” said Marc Deschamps, Director of Products & Business Development.
The new HPD® certifications complement a trio of Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) already awarded to Walker’s glass products. The EPDs cover full surface acid-etched glass, etched and unetched mirror, and AviProtek® bird safe glass options. Under the LEED v4 program, both EPD and HPD® help building owners to earn points in the Materials and Resources category for Building Product Disclosure and Optimization. In addition, the declarations can contribute to other green building evaluation systems including WELL, Green Globes and BREEAM. With both HPD® and EPD in place, Walker Glass is the responsible choice for any eco-conscious developer.
“Walker Glass is fully committed to safe and sustainable development. Protecting the environment along with the health and safety of our workers and our customers’ workers is a fundamental principle embraced by our company. It is vital that firms invest in EPD and HPD® to steer industries like ours toward a sustainable future,” said Charles Alexander, Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “We are happy to share these declarations with our clients and stakeholders. To see significant change, our industry needs to adopt responsible practices throughout the supply chain, and these declarations give our partners another reliable tool to select the ideal material for their projects.”
