To help educate the consumer on the benefits of energy-efficient windows, the National Fenestration Rating Council and the well-respected Efficient Windows Collaborative have redesigned and updated the website efficientwindows.org.

Homeowners can be overwhelmed when buying windows. With nearly limitless options on size, design and color, making a choice can be daunting. But one concern remains constant among window shoppers—they want energy-efficient options that provide comfort and save on their energy bills.

Now, to help educate the consumer on the benefits of energy-efficient windows, the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) and the well-respected Efficient Windows Collaborative (EWC) have redesigned and updated the website efficientwindows.org. Since NFRC acquired the site, they have steadily improved it, with updates to content and design, collaboration with other industry experts, and upgrades to the proprietary Window Selection Tool (WST).

“We invite anyone interested in energy-efficient windows to take a look at the Efficient Windows Collaborative and explore the Window Selection Tool,” said Deb Callahan, NFRC CEO. “As the name suggests, the EWC is a collaborative effort and we welcome input from site visitors as we continue to upgrade the content and features. All the windows on the site are backed by NFRC’s ratings and certification. And now window manufacturers have an additional tool to reach savvy consumers who want to invest in the most energy-efficient windows for their homes.”

The latest improvements include a modern design and user experience with easier access to information on the benefits of energy-efficient windows, ENERGY STAR® climate zones, and selecting the right window for a homeowner’s specific needs. In addition to updating the branding of the site to highlight NFRC’s role and authority for window information and energy ratings, NFRC staff have also completely overhauled the WST, making it easier for consumers to find the information that they need, and simplifying the process for participating manufacturers to have their products included in WST searches. The rollout of the site is on Jan. 20 with a webinar highlighting the upgrades.

What is the Window Selection Tool?

The WST is an application on the EWC’s website that takes homeowners through a series of questions to identify the windows that best meet their needs based on the geographic location of their home. All windows in the tool meet Energy Star requirements and are certified by NFRC, which provides peace of mind to homeowners.

Of course, the solution only improves with visitor traffic and with support from significant partners:

  • As an early partner with the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA), NFRC has joined the Partnership for Advanced Windows Solutions initiative. NFRC will provide a wide audience with resources on the value, benefits, and energy and cost savings of high-performing windows through the EWC.
  • NFRC received funding from the Department of Energy (DOE) to help upgrade the Window Selection Tool and promote the tool with consumers. Both NEEA and DOE will also promote the EWC to reach new audiences.
  • The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) links to the EWC on its new website for homeowners looking for information on ENERGY STAR home upgrades.

How Can You Support the EWC?

  2. Become a sustainability sponsor – all contributions go to improving the site and reaching homeowners to demonstrate the benefit of energy-efficient windows.
  3. Contribute content – See something we are missing? Let us know!
