The sealed atmosphere is nitrogen-rich and must remain inert as top-roll machines pull and ply the hot ribbon of glass into a specified width and thickness. If the tin bath side wall opening around the top roll machine barrel is not properly sealed, oxygen can breach the environment and cause defects in the glass.
To ensure effective isolation of the tin bath area of the float glass process, Pyrotek developed custom fabricated “boot seals” designed to provide a tight, temperature-resistant, flexible seal between the tin bath side wall and the top-roll machines. They provide excellent flexibility and lateral movement as the top-roll machines push, pull and twist. The boot seals are more cost effective than steel bellows and are easily installed and removed. They also are more durable compared to mortar seals, which crack due to the movement and high temperatures, and must be continually repaired.
Pyrotek boot seals can be sewn from several high-temperature, durable fabrics. Various styles and closure options can be incorporated into Pyrotek custom designs.
