Date: 9 November 2015

Case Study – The Kempinski Resort in Bahrain - A stay in a 5 star luxury hotel should offer a superior experience for guests, offering a chance to experience optimum levels of comfort and relaxation they could never possibly experience at home.

The Kempinski Grand & Ixir Hotel in Bahrain values the experience of each of their guests and takes hospitality to unprecedented levels. This is a 5 star hotel which really offers the “WOW” factor, offering superior comfort and relaxation. Comprising of 2 towers – the Grand Hotel and the Ixir Hotel – each tower offers their own flavour of Arabic hospitality and exceptional service.

With 460 luxurious rooms and suites on site, this resort oozes the level of prestige and exclusivity that the Kempinski resorts are renowned for across the globe. The resort offers direct access the Bahrain City Mall and is host to a collection of 7 individual bars and restaurants. Indeed the resort serves as an oasis of luxury in the heart in the heart of Manama, Bahrain.

Project Needs:

Keen to establish a superior level of 5 star hotel luxury in the construction of the resort, Smartglass Intl. were drafted in to custom design innovative, pristine smart glass panels to replace the curtain systems that had already been partially installed in the hotel bedrooms and suites. This decision was incredibly smart on the part of the architects and building contractors on the project. In doing so, the Kempinski Resort in Bahrain could achieve a sleek, luxurious design, enjoy a cost-effective, low maintenance alternative to electronic curtain systems and add value to their overall offering.

The Solution:

Sleek, innovative design

The original plan was to install electronic curtain systems in the rooms and suites of the resort. Curtains would really have taken away from the sleek, luxurious, prestigitious appearance that the resort was aiming to portray. The installation of pristine panels of switchable smart glass helped to create statement ensuites in the hotel bedrooms, offering the perfect blend of functionality and design. The inclusion of switchable glass in the design of the bedrooms enabled the resort to firmly establish a modern look and feel and the illusion of a brighter, larger space.

Cost-effectiveness

Not only did switchable smart glass prove a more visually appealing alternative to the electronic curtain systems that the construction team had planned on installing but the panels were also a more cost-effective choice. For luxury hotels, smart glass panels are a smart choice as they require a very low level of maintenance, are highly durable and are energy efficient ensuring a cost effective long term solution.

Adding value to the offering

One of the core attractions to incorporating switchable glass into hotel design is that it adds value to the overall hotel offering. Featuring switchable smart glass panels in the ensuite bathrooms of the bedrooms enabled the Kempinski Resort in Bahrain to promote that they offered “privacy on demand” to guests. The functionality of smart glass allows guests more control of their environment, something which enabled this 5 star hotel to really stand out among the crowd in terms of luxury, exclusivity and prestige. In fact, the smart glass panels which feature in the hotel bedrooms have been mentioned in numerous glowing Tripadvisor reviews for the resort.
