Saint-Gobain Glass elevates passenger experience at Chennai International Terminal

Date: 9 May 2013

Creating an ambience that combines aesthetic appeal with a soothing environ, the glass from Saint-Gobain has helped transform the new Chennai International terminal into a haven for travellers.

The intelligent use of 5th generation double silvered solar control glass across the facade design has resulted in the creation of a classy, contemporary, sustainable architecture.Saint-Gobain high performance glass ST167, 12 mm and SKN 154 has been used for the airport. While ST167, 12 mm has been used on the side facing the city to enable a good deal of transparency & solar control, the SKN154 has been used in the air side. For the urbane, trendy touch, the revolutionary coloured glass from Saint-Gobain – Planilaque – has been extensively used to panel the washrooms and guest rooms in the airport. The non-toxic, lead-free lacquered glass has not just brought in an international look and feel to the terminal, but has also significantly added to the sustainability factor.

The Terminal

With an area spanning 1,40,000 sq.mtrs.,140 check-in counters and 60 immigration counters, the Chennai International Airport Terminal is truly set to fly high. A team of architects comprising Frederic Schwartz Architects, Hargreaves Associates, Gensler, US and Creative Group, New Delhi have been deputed to design the expansion.

The dramatic, wing-like roof is complemented with a quiet elegance while a relationship of synergy co-exists between the terminal’s architectural beauty and the natural landscape. There are two lush gardens that are visible throughout the terminal, creating a unique dialogue between the interiors and exteriors.

The building’s steel structure rises with a curved roof to form a light and open, column-free terminal. The expansive glass curtain walls make sure that a feeling of spaciousness is created. Skylights follow the geometry of the trusses, further opening the structural framework to allow natural light to permeate the terminals.

In effect, what one gets to witness is a breathtaking spectacle for passengers, visitors and employees.

The Experience

Gone are the days when airports were nothing more than a stopover between the journey and destination. Today, with cross-continental travel being stressful enough, airports need to create an atmosphere of calm & comfort, a place where one can reduce the fatigue & stress that comes with travel. And The Chennai International Airport, along with Saint-Gobain Glass, is bound to do just that.

The airport has prudently used glass to create a visual treat while being functionally superior and ultimately enhancing the user experience. The high performance glass from Saint-Gobain provides excellent solar control that increases occupant comfort and reduces traveller fatigue, air conditioning & artificial lighting cost. Also, the coloured & lacquered glass, SGG Planilaque, greatly adds to the aesthetic value, making the Chennai International Terminal, truly international.
