Structura is currently working on a major renovation project for Heathrow Terminal 4, replacing 1980’s glass rooflights with 1750 metres of Kalwall above the Terminal’s International Departure Lounge and check-in desks.

Structura is working with Principal Contractor Balfour Beatty for main architects Pascall+Watson, and with Structural Engineers Webb Yates.

The new roof is fully compliant with the Department of Transport’s Aviation Security in Airport Development (ASIAD) standard.

The Kalwall improves the solar control and insulation in the building and its Crystal White finish means it looks great and provides privacy for the security screening area. The strength of the lightweight frame also means that the roof is safe to walk on.

Daniel Rickman, Kalwall General Manager at Structura explained, “We were able to use the existing substrate frame, saving £7m in project costs and shaving a year off the build programme. The whole retrofit is being completed externally in ‘engineering hours’, using a bespoke moving scaffold, so there is no disruption inside the building and we can ensure that the stringent security of the terminal is maintained throughout.”

The project is proving so successful that main contractor Balfour Beatty has named Structura its ‘Most Promising New Supplier 2018’.
