Explaining the Technology Behind Smart Glass Windows

Date: 1 October 2015

Smart glass windows have been used in many high-profile projects recently and are rapidly gaining in popularity in both home and commercial interior design.  However, while their benefits are widely known, there’s still confusion surrounding how exactly they work.

Therefore, we’ve decided to explain their technology, and answer some of the most frequently asked questions in the process.

How are smart glass windows constructed?

Smart glass windows are custom made to order, single glazed, double glazed or triple glazed and can be cut to any shape or size. The construction process is simple; for single glazed smart glass windows, we laminate two panes of glass with privacy or solar film between the glass which will have a cable extruding out of the top, side or bottom depending on specifications. The construction of double glazed and triple glazed smart glass windows follows the same steps with the addition of a spacer bar and toughened glass on the opposite side.

How are the windows powered?

As our window panels are custom made and vary in size, we offer two transformers (65v & 110v). On full detail of the project size, we will offer the best suited power transformer. 65v will power up to 4M² and 110v will power up to 12M². Transformers are required to be wired to a mains and installed at the site of the glass panels. Power Consumption is less than 5 Watt/M² hence smart glass windows are highly energy efficient.

How can smart glass windows be controlled?

Smart glass windows operate in several ways, we supply a kinetic remote switch which can be used as a hand held device or attached to a wall in a location suited to the user. Panels can also be wired into a Building Management System (BMS)  as well as timers or sensors.

What happens if I have a power cut?

In the event of a power cut, smart glass windows will automatically default to their darkened state. This automatic reaction ensures that privacy is not hindered even when the power supply is down.

How can smart glass windows be cleaned?

Cleaning can be carried out in much the same way as normal glass windows by using a slightly damp cloth or professional glass cleaning product.  Abrasive products should not be used as these may scratch the glass surface.  Excess water should not be used and the Smartglass should be in the “off” state while being cleaned. Any excess water should be removed before switching the Smartglass panel on.
