ift technical information SC-11/1 offers a simple verification of airborne and flanking sound insulation for facade details.

Specifications for airborne and flanking sound insulation of the building components are required for planning the building acoustics of buildings.

So far, for curtain walls, this could be verified only on the basis of measurements in the laboratory or from examinations conducted directly on the building.

So far, there has been no table-based method as in the case of windows. By formulating a catalogue of standard construction for curtain walls in the course of an ift research project, this "gap" has now been closed.

The results have been summarised in the new ift expert information SC-11/1. Specifications can be provided for airborne sound insulation and flanking sound insulation without measurements. As a result, the effort in terms of time and the costs are reduced considerably for those concerned.

Specifications for airborne and flanking sound insulation are required for planning the building acoustics of buildings. For "curtain walls", such specifications could be verified so far only on the basis of laboratory measurements or from examinations made on the construction (from so-called quality tests). There was no option existing for planning and verification using a tabular method, in contrast to windows.

In an ift research project (sponsored by the research initiative, Zukunft Bau of the German Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development), the basic principles for analytical determination of airborne sound insulation and flanking sound insulation were prepared.

It is now possible to verify the specifications for airborne sound insulation and flanking sound insulation for standardised facade details without measurements.

As a result, the cost and effort of verification reduces considerably, and this affects both the costs and the time required for execution. In addition, the characteristic acoustic values for standard details offer advantages for planning and constructing facades.

The analyses and examinations conducted in the course of the project are based on a database research in a comprehensive pool from 30 years of experience in testing at ift Rosenheim and on measurement-related examinations on facade elements from which then the catalogue of standard construction has been compiled. Characteristic values and standard details are available for the following segments:

1. Airborne sound insulation of curtain walling

2. Horizontal flanking sound insulation of window sections

3. Horizontal flanking sound insulation of curtain walls

4. Vertical flanking sound insulation of curtain walling

Detailed explanations of the acoustic correlations and sample calculations facilitate easy application even for practical use.
