DC Thomson, national leading media organisation and publishers of The Beano and The Dandy, offers a great example of how creative you can be with our technology.

Headquartered in Dundee, Scotland with a London base on the world-famous Fleet Street, DC Thomson kicked off the project for their London base by commissioning Dundee based architects, Nicoll Russell Studios to curate and develop it.

This genius application of our switchable film sees its great features used to maximum effect. By installing switchable film in the front-facing windows on all 4 of the building’s floors, DC Thomson’s windows are transformed into a giant panel-effect rear projection screen that also offers an excellent privacy solution at the press of a button.

However, it’s how the glass is used as a projector screen that makes this application truly original. Treating the central windows at the front of the building as a singular canvas, the panelled switchable windows essentially become one screen, enforcing a sense of scale.

Synchronising the animations across the panels rather than treating each screen as an isolated window creates an effect that makes the audience feel as though they are witnessing a real-life scene taking place behind the windows. This helps to bring the cartoon animations to life, and therefore, invoking a strong sense of intrigue and wonder.

Teamwork Made This Project

Expertly installed by Invicta Window Films Limited, Intelligent Glass were proud manufacturers of the film used for this amazing project. Strong teamwork between the two organisations allowed for the very best in skill, talent and service being delivered on all fronts.

Invicta Window Films’ Contracts Director, Gary Dinsmore, took charge of the whole project from commission to completion, working around the tricky technical aspects that separated this venture from others.

Aside from the ambitious conceptual challenges faced in synchronising animations over 4 floors, the project was further complicated by the fact that DC Thomson’s windows required 39 individual sections of Switchable Film, many of them needed to remain openable and 10 of them were curved.

Having an expert such as Gary heading the project allowed everyone involved to get the very best out of our technology.

Intelligent Glass offers a wide range of switchable smart glass solutions with options including toughened glass, laminated panels, smart glass windows and the retrofit self-adhesive switchable film.
