Senior specified for Leicester Schools BSF scheme

Date: 12 October 2015

An extensive portfolio of products from leading fenestration designer and manufacturer Senior Architectural Systems has been selected for use on four new schools that have been created as part of the Leicester City Council’s ambitious £350m Building Schools for the Future (BSF) scheme.

Working alongside architects Aedas and main contractor Miller Construction, leading fabricator Acorn Aluminium Limited has installed Senior’s thermally-efficient SCW+ curtain wall, SPW600e windows and SD commercial doors system at St.Paul’s Catholic School, Babington Community College and City of Leicester College.  Work has also been completed at Ellesmere College, which is the only special school in the country to have been totally rebuilt at part of the BSF programme.St.Paul’s Catholic SchoolThe consistency of working with Acorn Aluminium Limited across all four of the contracts and utilising the same suite of Senior products for each has brought numerous benefits in terms of speed and quality of installation, reduced costs and greater management of future maintenance requirements.  Although the four schools differ greatly in terms of their location, size and facilities, the flexibility of Senior’s systems has helped Acorn to successfully meet the individual requirements of each project, ensuring that the architect’s aesthetic vison was fully realised.Babington Community CollegeCommenting on the contract, Lily Scutts, business development manager from Acorn Aluminium Limited said: “On such a large-scale and high profile scheme as this, it was vital that work was completed on time and to budget.  Owing somewhat to the flexibility of Senior’s curtain wall and glazing systems, we were able to use the same products to create different effects and meet different performance criteria without any compromise to the individual needs of each school. The reliability of working with the same manufacturer throughout, in terms of the quality, cost and performance of the products, made Senior the ideal supply chain partner for this contract.”

As one of the first to sign up for the BSF initiative, Leicester is also one of the few to be unaffected by the Government’s review of the scheme in 2010 and the new school developments have transformed the educational environment for students in the city.
