PPG develops glass-faced replacement windshield for Challenger 600 Series jets

Date: 21 March 2008

PPG Industries’ (NYSE:PPG) aerospace transparencies business has developed a lightweight, glass-faced acrylic replacement windshield for Bombardier Challenger 600, 601, 604 and 605 business jets to provide operators with the chemical and abrasion resistance of glass as well as the weight-saving benefits of plastic.

The new heated windshield manufactured by PPG subsidiary Sierracin/Sylmar Corp. is being introduced in PPG Aerospace’s booth (1449) during the Aviation Industry Expo at the Dallas Convention Center through Thursday, March 20.

“By replacing the acrylic outer ply with tempered glass, we are able to offer a lightweight windshield with longer service life than an all-acrylic part,” said Ed Terk, segment manager.

Sierracin/Sylmar also manufactures replacement side cockpit windows for the Challenger 600 Series fleet as well as replacement passenger-cabin windows for Challenger 600, 601 and 604 aircraft.

PPG Aerospace – Transparencies is the world’s largest supplier of aircraft windshields, windows and canopies, manufactured at PPG’s Huntsville, Ala., plant and by PPG subsidiaries Sierracin/Sylmar Corp. in Sylmar, Calif., and Ampaspace in Casaletto Vaprio, Italy.
