The state-of-the-art facility features 22,500 square feet of glass fabricated by JEB at its plant in Pedricktown, New Jersey.
New York City–based Gluckman Mayner Architects designed the 200,000-square-foot building as an iconic new home for the Syracuse University College of Law, featuring openness and natural light, which was made possible through the creative and extensive use of glass.
Project architect Richard Gluckman said, “The introduction of daylight into every occupied space in the building was central to the design. Glass components were used on all four sides of the building, at the two-story clerestory enclosing the third-level green roof, and the third-floor skylight. With the abundant use of glass, it was important for us to specify glass that would limit solar heat gain.”
The design team also integrated decorative glass throughout the building’s interior as a durable, maintainable, and cost-effective way to allow natural light to flow between spaces.
JEB fabricated one-inch JEB Winduo® Dual Glazed IGUs (insulating glass units) with high-performance, low-e SNX 62/27 glass by Guardian Industries, as well as multiple laminated IGU configurations with low-iron, silk-screened, spandrel, and ceramic-frit glasses. For the interior decorative glasses, JEB laminated Starphire ultra-clear glass by PPG Industries with custom-colored interlayers.
One of the biggest challenges was matching the color scheme desired by Syracuse University, according to John Mathews, estimator and inside sales rep at JEB.
“Not only did we match the colors for the custom powder-blue and polar-white PVB interlayers, but we also matched the interlayers with the ceramic frit for the spandrel and silkscreen units, as well as the decorative monolithic glass panels throughout the building,” Mathews said. “In total, there are more than two dozen different types of insulating glass units and monolithic glass types used in the building.”
“Color consistency between panels in large areas of colored glass was also a challenge,” Gluckman added. “We are very pleased with the results.”
Opened in September 2014, Dineen Hall is expected to earn LEED® Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The facility features all the components of a 21st century legal education center under one roof, including a 33,500-square-foot library, 325-seat ceremonial courtroom, lecture rooms, work rooms, offices, lounge spaces, roof terrace, and café.--- To learn more about JEB’s glass fabrication capabilities, please visit www.JEBerkowitz.com.
