AIA is the largest, most influential network of architecture professionals, now with over 100,000 members who share a passion for design, a desire to change the world, and a commitment to following the highest standards of practice.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has welcomed its 100,000th member for the first time in the organization’s 167-year history, continuing a trend of increasing membership at AIA, which has grown by nearly 6,000 new members over the past three years. Kayla Pratt, Assoc. AIA, with Little Diversified Architectural Consulting, is the 100,000th AIA member, as well as a member of AIA South Carolina and AIA Charleston.

“I joined the AIA because after graduating college and starting my professional career, I realized the importance of continuing education," said Kayla Pratt, Assoc. AIA. “While working in an office, it was challenging to stay connected with evolving ideas and advancements in architectural technology that I had been exposed to in school. I wanted to expand my knowledge and grow beyond where I was when I graduated.”

AIA has been recognized over 10 times in the last two years by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) for programming achievements that provide value to members as well as the public. Most recently AIA was recognized with an ASAE Power of Associations Silver Award for AIAU, for AIA’s online learning platform.

“By providing the support and opportunities necessary for members to be successful at every career level, AIA is working hard to improve the day-to-day experience of practicing architecture and shaping the built environment,” said 2024 AIA President, Kimberly Dowdell, AIA, NOMAC. “Reaching 100,000 members represents a huge accomplishment for the organization, and it signals that our work is resonating with more architects, allied, and emerging professionals who are committed to designing a better, more sustainable, and equitable future.”

“This milestone speaks volumes about the valuable role AIA plays providing architects with the tools they need to be successful. Reaching 100,000 members didn’t happen by accident,” said AIA CEO/EVP Lakisha Ann Woods, CAE. “It is evident that both AIA and its local chapters have done a great job of articulating the benefits and professional opportunities that come with membership, helping to attract new members who are integral to the future of the profession. AIA is a constant bridge between passion and progress.”

Members join AIA to distinguish themselves among peers, display their dedication and excellence to clients, stay current, and contribute to the architecture profession. Explore the key benefits that entice architecture and design professionals to become and remain AIA members:

  • AIA Designation: AIA membership is most widely recognized by the use of the AIA designation. Acknowledged by clients, civic leaders, and the AEC industry as an abiding commitment to professional excellence, an AIA designation after an architect’s name signals the highest standards of architectural practice.
  • Awards: AIA’s local and national awards are the most prestigious in the industry. AIA’s award program features 30+ awards, including the Architecture Firm Award, the AIA Gold Medal, the COTE Top Ten Awards, and the Whitney M. Young Jr. Award.
  • Career support: AIA members have discounted access to AIAU courses and practice guides, as well as support for their career and practice through members groups like the Young Architect’s Forum.
  • Community connection: AIA members often find their deepest connection to profession through the over 200 chapters and 30 Knowledge Communities offering events, education, local network, and other benefits tailored to local interests.
  • Discounts: AIA members receive exclusive discounts on products and services from AIA Corporate Partners, including FedEx, Hertz, Sixt, and Dell. Members also save on AIA products like Contract Documents and MasterSpec.
  • Government advocacy: AIA advocates on behalf of architects and the profession at the federal, state, and local levels.  From advocating against fee limitations for federal design projects to supporting sustainable and resilient communities, AIA is championing the issues important to architects.
  • Insurance: AIA members have access to the AIA Trust, which offers insurance and benefit programs.
  • Networking and career advancement: Through signature events like the Women’s Leadership Summit and the AIA Conference on Architecture and Design, AIA offers a unique opportunity for architects to not only network with their peers, but leaders across the industry.
  • Research and reports: AIA's exclusive industry research, reports, and economic data are designed to help members build a successful practice, minimize risk, and design the future of the built environment.
