One of the most iconic buildings in St. Paul history is the Schmidt Brewing Company. Unfortunately, after its heyday the building sat dormant for more than a decade. Now, it has a new life.

Just in October 2018, the Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The National Register of Historic Places is the united states official list of all historical districts, sites, buildings, structures and objects deemed worthy of perseveration for their historical significance.

This designation is years in the making, and was not an easy path. Before it could be historically recognized, the dilapidated building needed to be restored.

How St. Cloud Window Created New Historic Windows

St. Cloud Window had the honor of helping in this decades-in-the-making restoration project. We provided custom-manufactured replacement windows in the Schmidt Brewery Building. Many of the existing windows were too far gone to meet today’s standards.

In addition, the odd shapes and configurations of the building posed a huge challenge. After a lengthy analysis, we created a plan of both custom replacements and secondary glazing to meet historic and performance needs.

This was a challenging project for us, but we were so excited to see the end result and even more pleased that our historic windows were recognized as historically appropriate enough to aid in receiving a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.

Together with other talented construction crews, architects and builders from around Minnesota, we breathed new life into this historic building. With this new designation, the building is protected for years to come. It’s already seen a resurgence as the home of the brand new Keg and Case food market. Whatever future lies in store for the building, we were proud to help restore and protect it.
