SCHOTT’s glass laminates offer proven simultaneous protection against fire, burglary and ballistic threats

The threat of wilful attack from both external forces and fire can be very real for a number of organisations, and therefore safeguarding employees, visitors and building contents of embassies, consulates and government buildings is paramount. “SCHOTT is leading the way in providing a glass laminate that can not only stop penetration by bullet, but then go on to also protect from fire directly afterwards or vice versa,” explains Martin Brown, Sales Manager for SCHOTT UK.



To meet these unique demands, SCHOTT developed the highly effective, yet compact, multifunctional laminates. This type of complex structure is necessary in order to ensure that SCHOTT’s new products are able to resist multiple simultaneous attacks, while offering a high level of transparency and thermal resistance.

To prove the effectiveness of its products, SCHOTT will display a series of five PYRANOVA® secure laminates. The 34 mm thick samples will be 1500 mm x 300 mm, weighing 78.5 kg/m². The glass laminates are bullet resistant according to EN1063: BR2NS and, even after having been shot at, can still fulfil the fire resistance category EI30. Both during and after a Molotov cocktail attack, SCHOTT's product is bullet resistant. Five scenarios are shown: original, shot at, burnt, shot at and burnt, burnt and shot at: “These demonstration laminates prove that the performance of our material fulfils several multi attack criteria and enables visitors to see the results close up,” says Martin Brown.



Background information:



PYRANOVA® secure has been subjected to a fire test and bullet attack immediately after one another. This type of trial involving a barrage of potentially destructive assaults was performed for the first time anywhere in the world. The tests were carried out in September 2013. The results were monitored and confirmed by two independent institutes, the Beschussamt Ulm (Ballistic test facility in Ulm) and the Institute for Building Materials, Solid Construction and Fire Protection (IBMB) at the Technical University of Braunschweig. The glasses met both of the test standards DIN EN 1364-1 (Fire Protection) and DIN EN 1063 (Bullet Resistance). Due to the fact that the European legislator only requires that protective glasses meet EN safety standards individually, SCHOTT became the world's first company to voluntarily subject its safety laminates to a combination of tests.



The development of the new safety glass range has received support from the Thuringian State Government and the European Regional Development Fund EFRE as part of the research project “2nd Generation Multifunctional Safety Glazing” (2011 FE 0156) since October 2011.
