“Efficient Design Utilizing Decorative Guardrails” Satisfies Portion of AIA Continuing Education Requirement.

SC Railing Company, a leading national provider of architectural railing systems, has partnered with AEC Daily to sponsor a free, one-hour online course titled, “Efficient Design Utilizing Decorative Guardrails,” that examines guardrails in terms of their structure, safety, and style.

AEC Daily offers continuing education courses that allow architecture, engineering, and construction professionals, including members of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), access to free, convenient, and expert education in a variety of specialized fields.

“Guardrails are as much about aesthetics and design as they are about safety,” said Dan Stachel, Vice President of SC Railing Company.

“Most professionals in the industry strive for the right combination of both. That is why our course offers comprehensive information not only about identifying guardrail styles, but also how they fit into a complete design, and challenges practitioners might encounter with various code compliance standards.”

This course, which is available online 24/7 at aecdaily.com, offers professionals essential knowledge of state-of-the-art materials, finishes, and infill options and how each affects the overall project and budget.

It also provides the latest updates to the 2015 International Building Code (IBC), includes a section on current LEED requirements, and provides a comprehensive image gallery to engage users in a highly visual learning environment.

Upon completing this course, professionals will be able to:

  • Explain how loading requirements, member selection, and deflection affect guardrail system design and performance
  • Recall 2015 IBC code criteria related to handrails and guards, and apply them to the design of a safe guardrail system
  • Discuss the advantages and considerations of three types of glass guardrail support systems
  • Specify guardrail materials, finishes, and infills that are appropriate for the project environment, design and aesthetic goals, and budget
