For this particular project the installation was part of a major refurbishment plan at The Retreat, a specialist mental health care provider based in York, that works with the NHS to provide care for people with complex and challenging needs.
In recent years The Retreat has formed a partnership with the Disabilities Trust to provide an intensive neurobehavioural assessment and rehabilitation service for individuals with severe cognitive, physical and/or emotional problems following acquired brain injury.
For Orangery Solutions, part of the requirements for the 16,000 GBP project was to create a comfortable area that would adhere to the Retreat's ethos of providing a spacious environment that gives an overwhelming feeling of calm when entering the building.
As the property is protected as part of the English Heritage scheme, Orangery Solutions had to customize the installation to be sympathetic to the surrounding period buildings, which are set in 40 acres of ground.
The patented cassette system, available only from Orangery Solutions, offers many structural advantages over alternatives and is proven to withstand a one tonne side wind load with ease, which easily met the stringent building regulations and requirements of the architect and planners.
Working alongside the in-house architect who had appointed Orangery Solutions on recommendation, the company produced a 6.2 x 5.0 m brick parapet style orangery, which was to be used as a day room with views over extensive lawns.
The installation was needed to connect an existing stable area and the main building as part of major renovations that would create extra space for accommodation.
An Apex/ Pyramid style lantern was produced by the company with an external paint finish that matched all existing period details and complemented the surroundings. Additionally it was stipulated that all external finishes required minimal maintenance.
Martin Ferguson, Estate Manager at The Retreat comments, "The Orangery Solutions system has met our needs perfectly.
It can be a minefield to get planning approved when trying to alter and extend listed establishments like The Retreat, so it was very reassuring to know they could easily meet our building requirements.
This also greatly helped to complete the project in a shorter timescale.
The finished installation links the two areas perfectly and is a beautiful space for people to relax and enjoy which is so important for us as care providers."Paul Nellis, Managing Director at Orangery Solutions, "For projects that require all aspects of the historic environment and its heritage assets to be taken into consideration, our system provides the ideal solution.
We have developed a variety of external finishes including pilasters, fascias and cornices that match and meet the requisite building standards associated with English Heritage buildings.
