New Decorflou patterns designed by Defne Koz

At Fiera Architektonika – Lingotto in Turin, June 30–July 3 – the DecorFlouDesign collection confirms once more its commitment to innovative development and to the cooperation with the most creative designers in the field, with the launch of a new line of patterns designed by Defne Koz.



With her training in Ettore Sottsass’ studio and a cosmopolitan background steeped in both the ancient and the contemporary of Turkish, Italian and American culture, Defne Koz has acquired specific skills in the field of glass design. From Murano glass to crystals, from laser-cut sheets to prints, she has experienced first-hand the material’s wide potential. Her skills have now been brought to ideal fruition in her project for OmniDecor.

In line with the company’s tradition of state-of-the-art R&D and aesthetics, the patterns by Defne Koz express to the fullest the unique versatility and architectural essentiality of glass sheets. Architecture played a major role in inspiring Defne Koz’s project for OmniDecor.

The environment of light and shadow, movement and transparency, brings DecorFlou glass to the fore in eliciting the dynamics of both the visual and tactile effects of Defne Koz’s patterns. Her research has focused on patterns adding a third dimension of depth to a bi-dimensional platform, as well as evoking a feeling of “softness” from a hard material, as further proof of the flexible and wide-ranging expressive potential of glass.

Texture, geometry, the dynamics of clear versus opaque: everything conspires to bring to life an architectural element that is the fertile focus of Defne Koz’s designing passion, with the creation of patterns specifically conceived for different processes and surfaces. An alternation of surfacing and vanishing perceptions constantly renewed by the slightest change in surroundings.



Defne Koz



Defne Koz, industrial designer, divides her time between her studios in Milan, Chicago and Istanbul. She designed more than 150 products for companies like Foscarini, Leucos, FontanaArte, Sharp, Alessi, Mobileffe, Liv’it, Pirelli, Slide, Egizia, Rapsel-Nito, Gabbianelli, Cappellini, Guzzini, Steel, RSVP, WMF, Vitra, Authentics, Nissan, Casio, Alparda, MPD, Gaia&Gino, Nurus, Derin.

Her recent bathroom products for Vitra have received the Red Dot Design Award 2006; her lamps Dress and Circus have been for the past 10 years among Foscarini’s best sellers; her lamp Relax was awarded the "Best in Category" Prize in the ID Magazine Design Annual, her products has been selected to ADI index; Her glasses "Liquids" for Gaia&Gino won the Good Design Award Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design.

Among her Architectural projects are the design of the executive headquarters for Eczacibasi in Istanbul, interiors for numerous private houses, various retail spaces, and more recently the renovation of an apartment in the Lake Shore Drive building by Mies Van Der Rohe in Chicago. Her idea of design is influenced by her training in Ettore Sottsass’ studio, by the combination of her Turkish and Italian culture, and by her curiosity for very different product types.

Her interests span from humanizing new technologies like digital audio systems to rediscovering the tradition of hand made ceramics. Common to all her projects are her distinctive design language and the research on the sensorial qualities of materials. For Alessi she reinterpreted the technique of metal wire frame, for Egizia she explored innovative decoration on glass, for Guzzini she worked on transferring the qualities of Murano glass into industrial injection molded plastics, for Vitra she proposed hi-tech gel materials for the bathroom environment, and she helped reviving the tradition of Iznik ceramics in Turkey.

In past she held seminars at Domus Academy, Milano; Fukui Prefecture, Japan; Architectural Association, London; Technical University, Istanbul; Bilgi University, Istanbul; Centro Borges, Buenos Aires and several other organizations. Her designs have been exhibited at Triennale di Milano, Galleria Jannone, Galleria Posteria, Spazio Mudima, Ideabooks, Galleria Post Design, Spazio Vigentina in Milan, Biennale del Vetro Venezia, MeDesign in Genoa, IDYB Koeln, Kunstmuseum Dusseldorf, Ubersee Museum Bremen, Ozone Gallery Tokyo, Abitare il Tempo Verona, Museo di Pietrarsa Napoli, Designers’ Odyssey METU Ankara, Ars Design Gallery Ankara. She obtained her Master in Design at Domus Academy after a Graduation.

OmniDecor, an international group based in Erba (Como), is a market leader in the manufacture of high quality satin finished glass. History

OmniDecor Spa was founded in 1994 on the basis of a long manufacturing tradition. The company rapidly became a world leader in the satin finished glass sector. The new company was in fact the direct descendent of the glassworks set up by the Bresciani family in Brianza in 1939. The experience gained in the industrial processing of glass in Milan during the first decades of the twentieth century was invaluable. It is a history full of innovation.

The three most important steps are as follows. During the 1960s the company was one of the first in Italy to adopt an integrated manufacturing cycle based on conveyor belts to produce silvered glass for the furniture industry. In 1968 Antonio Bresciani implemented a manufacturing cycle to produce satin finished glass. He also introduced the satin finished process thus beginning production on an industrial scale.

The first patents were filed in Italy and the United States. During the 1990s Ferruccio Bresciani (one of the two company owners) designed and built the enamelling and painting system for coloured glass used mainly in the areas of interior design and architecture. Today, by always satisfying the most varied types of demand, OmniDecor is not only a multinational company based in Erba (Como), but also a market leader in the manufacture of satin finished glass for architecture, interior design and interior furnishing.
