In April 1986, as a young journalist on his first foreign assignment for the United Press International Television News, John was snatched on the way to the airport just before he was about to fly back home and kidnapped by Islamic Jihad.
He became Britain’s longest-held hostage, being held in captivity for more than five years until his release on 8 August 1991.
At this year’s Glazing Summit dinner, John will tell the dramatic story of his captivity in a dignified, self-deprecating and inspiring way that makes you understand how he came through five years of not knowing whether he would see another day.
Glazing Summit founder Andrew Scott said: “We are honoured to have John McCarthy join us as the after-dinner speaker at our Glazing Summit dinner. John will share his fascinating story and remarkable journey and provide delegates with a thought-provoking talk about resilience.”
The Gala Dinner, which is sponsored by leading uPVC systems companies VEKA, takes place in the evening after the day’s highly anticipated Glazing Summit at Edgbaston Stadium, Birmingham on Thursday, October 12.
Held in the Edgbaston Banqueting Suite, it brings together more than 200 of the industry’s senior leaders and features a champagne drinks’ reception, three-course gala dinner, wine on the table and private bar.
“The Glazing Summit dinner is the perfect end to the day, so make sure you don’t miss out on this excellent opportunity to connect with the industry’s main players for a fantastic evening,” added Andrew.
Delegates are welcome to attend the Glazing Summit, the Gala Dinner or both, but spaces are limited.
