Newly elected Club Captain and retired Pilkington employee John Clarke - who worked for the company for 41 years until his retirement as Logistics Manager, in 1998 - obliged in traditional style by presenting Mark Lyons with one red rose. Pilkington has had long-standing connections with Grange Park Golf Club and is the club's landlord. Prior to the company going public in 1970, the late Lord Pilkington, then Chairman of Pilkington, met representatives of the Club to discuss the purchase of the 117 acres. For technical reasons the sale had to be a lease, but a lease involved the payment of a nominal ground rent. The red rose rent was agreed indicating Pilkington’s Lancastrian roots. Every year since, a Pilkington representative has called at the Club to demand the rent and the Club Captain has obliged.Mark Lyons, President of Building Products Worldwide, visited Grange Park Golf Club, Prescot Road, St Helens, on Friday, 23rd July, to demand quick payment of the annual rent.
