FGIA releases new Technical Bulletin with guidelines for testing of moisture vapor transmission rate, presenting results.

The Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA) has released a new Technical Bulletin providing standardized test method, sample configuration and units for reporting purposes for the transmission rate of moisture vapor pertaining to insulating glass units (IGUs). IGMA TB-2701-23, Guidelines for the Testing of Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate (MVTR) and the Presentation of the Results, an FGIA Technical Bulletin, is now available for purchase in the FGIA online store.

Based on updated ASTM test methods available and their relevance to IGU testing, it was decided to adopt ASTM F1249 as the standard test method for evaluating sealant MVTR.

“This document helps modernize the methods that fenestration professionals can use to test the rate of moisture permeation across IGU edge sealants,” said Brian White (H.B. Fuller), Chair of the FGIA Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate (MVTR) Update Task Group. “Knowing the MVTR of a particular sealant is critical to choosing the best barrier to moisture ingress and ensuring the longest possible IGU service life.”

IGMA TB-2701-23, as well as other IGMA documents and Technical Bulletins available from FGIA, may be purchased from the online store at the discounted member rate of $15 or the non-member price of $45.
