Part of the £1million injection into further automating production processes in tandem with expanding manufacturing space, the latest phase sees the commissioning of a new Schirmer BAZ 1000 Orbit cutting and machine centre.
The Schirmer installation completes a line-up that also includes a four headed Urban sash line with automated corner cleaning and conveyor, and an Emmegi Phantomatic 4 axis aluminium CNC machine.
John Whalley, MD of Nationwide Windows & Doors, comments: “Production levels have been at an all-time high. In fact, we’ve calculated that we’re now manufacturing and installing one product every minute of every working day. As today’s market demands a more complex and varied product offering, investment in manufacturing operations is essential to keep up with output, drive quality and importantly, control price to future-proof our strong relationships with our customers.”
The new machine centre, supplied by Winmac UK, is only the second of its kind to be installed in the UK. It features Schirmer’s newly designed machine head, which – with its quad motor setup – works 360 degrees around the bar being machined. This allows a significant improvement in both speed and efficiency.
Discussing the project, Winmac UK MD David Stone commented: “This project was a real collaboration between Nationwide Windows & Doors, Winmac and Schirmer. Having invited the Nationwide team to see a Schirmer in action, we then agreed the full specification, including detail such as the floor space layout. Schirmer then produced the machine to Nationwide’s spec, and – after final testing – our group went to Schirmer’s facility in Germany to sign off the new centre, before delivery.
“The machine centre was installed and tested without a hiccough, and then we provided full operator and engineer training to Nationwide staff, so they could hit the ground running.”
John concludes: “It’s important to invest for short term needs, but it’s equally important to recognise the rate at which the industry can evolve. We want to be prepared for the future, and so it is crucial to have foresight, particularly when it comes to investing in machinery. As well as ensuring customers will continue to receive quality services and innovative products, the move also allows Nationwide Windows & Doors to continue to grow its output to satisfy an ever-increasing order book. I am grateful to Winmac and Schirmer, who made the specification, installation and follow-up training process very smooth and simple.”
