Hall 11 / Stand B43Coherent, Inc. (Santa Clara, CA) (Nasdaq: COHR) unveils new low-power CO2 lasers that feature excellent beam quality and a very small footprint.

Called the DIAMONDTM C-55 and DIAMOND C-70, these OEM lasers provide more than 55W and 70W of output power, respectively, at 10.55- to 10.63-µm. Their M2 <1.2 (<1.3 for C-70) beam quality makes them ideal for medium- to high-volume marking, engraving and desktop manufacturing.

The C-55 was built using the same laser cavity as its predecessor, the GEM-50. However, it features an innovative platform where the power supply RF driver is integrated into the same housing as the laser head. This results in a compact, robust package that can withstand the most demanding environments. The C-55 provides 10% higher power than its predecessor and comes in a single, compact package, providing ease of integration and enabling previously unattainable desktop-sized, high throughput marking and engraving systems. These innovative lasers use the same technical approach of integrating the RF module with the proven, high-performance laser cavity as the widely successful GEM-30.

“The advantages of the C-55 are numerous. You get the agility and ease of integration that comes with a compact integrated platform, as well as the reliability and dependability that comes with using a field-proven technology,” said Ron Straayer, product line manager at Coherent. “Plus, you get a laser with higher power levels at a lower price point.”

Available in both air- and liquid-cooled models, the C-55 measures just 537.1 mm by 92.5 mm by 154 mm (21.2 in x 3.6 in x 6.0 in) for the air-cooled version and 537.1 mm by 92.5 mm by 103 mm (21.2 in x 3.6 in x 4.04 in) for the liquid-cooled version. The C-55 has a superior rise time of less than 60 µsec. It runs on 48 VDC (25 amps) and has an RJ-45 ethernet connector.

Also available is the 70W version of the same platform. The C-70 uses an asymmetrical optical cavity to obtain 70W of power from the same compact and integrated package. The C-70 is available in both elliptical (uncorrected) and circular (corrected) versions.

New Pulsed, UV Laser Enables Higher Throughput Via Drilling

The new AVIA™ Thor™ from Coherent, Inc. (Santa Clara, CA) (Nasdaq: COHR) is an all-solid-state, Q-switched, UV laser that enables more rapid micromachining than any previous laser or mechanical method. This superior micromachining capability is a result of the Thor’s unique combination of high pulse energy (>500 microjoules) and high repetition rate (30 kHz), which corresponds to over 15W of average power. Thor’s average power is more than 50% greater than any other industrial laser with 355 nm output.

Together with the Thor’s exceptional lifetime and durability, the average power output makes this unique laser an ideal tool for high-throughput via hole drilling in PC boards, fuel injector nozzle drilling, surface cleaning and IC singulation. It can also be used for drilling, cutting and trenching of numerous hard materials, such as stainless steel, silicon, ceramics, diamond and sapphire.

Thor builds upon the proven technology and construction used in Coherent’s other AVIA industrial lasers to enable long operational lifetime and minimum downtime under
continuous-use conditions in harsh industrial environments. For example, PermAlign™ mounting eliminates the need for periodic optical alignment, and Coherent’s proprietary HGX™ UV harmonic generation system routinely delivers more than 15,000 hours of third-harmonic crystal lifetime.
