The U.S. Department of Energy this week is conducting a three-day industrial energy-saving assessment at the PPG Industries plant in South Middleton Twp.

The department said the assessment is part of a Bush administration effort to work with major manufacturing facilities to identify ways to save energy and money, chiefly by focusing on heating systems.

The PPG plant makes flat glass for the automotive and architectural-trade industries. It is one of 108 facilities operated by Pittsburgh-based PPG Industries worldwide.

The Energy Department called PPG Industries an industry leader in improving the efficiency of glass-making operations and in working to reduce natural gas and energy consumption.
