World's largest cruise ships use Vetrotech's safe glass solutions

Date: 22 February 2016

Oasis of the Seas, part of the Royal Caribbean International fleet, is one of the largest luxury cruise ships ever built.

Previously, the largest ships were those in the Freedom class – but Oasis of the Seas is some 45% larger than these predecessors.Constructed in 2009 by STX Europe (formerly Aker Yards) in Turku, Finland, Oasis of the Seas is 16 decks tall and weighs 220,000gt.It can accommodate a remarkable 5,400 passengers in a wide range of rooms. There are 2,700 suites, loft suites and staterooms, and the generous family suites can accommodate up to 14 people.

Innovative features, unique views and exciting activities

With an innovative split structure and divided into seven different themed 'neighbourhood' areas, Oasis of the Seas has many features never seen before on a cruise ship. For example, running down the middle of the ship, there is the Central Park neighbourhood – a relaxing, serene area with flowers and a canopy of trees; and Boardwalk – featuring a range of family entertainment. There's also the Rising Tide bar which moves up and down between decks, taking guests from one neighbourhood to another.

This central neighbourhood also contains a range of shopping areas and provides many restaurant options for both the daytime and evening. For the more adventurous, there are two climbing walls and the FlowRider surf experience, as well as a zip-line nine decks high that traverses the area.

Passengers occupying one of the 334 rooms that overlook this area have a unique view, very different to most inward-facing rooms on other cruise ships. In fact, if they choose the right room, some passengers can even watch the entertainment in the large amphitheatre-style AquaTheatre from the comfort of their own private balcony.

Custom-made glass solutions

Vetrotech supplied triangular fire-resistant glass panes for the partition in the Central Park neighbourhood. Due to the requirements of this vast project, we selected our glass solution specifically for use in the construction of Oasis of the Seas. In total, we supplied approximately 250m² of fire-resistant double-glazed units (DGUs) in the form of Contraflam® Lite, combined with the sophisticated solar-protective coating KM Ultimate 20-1. This combination means passengers and crew can enjoy maximum safety and comfort.

A remarkable feat of engineering, Oasis of the Seas provides the ultimate cruise experience, where the degree of luxury and attention to passenger enjoyment is matched by the level of innovation.
