Several South African trade unions are currently in negotiations with employers over wage increases. A number of trade unions have already embarked on strike action, while others are threatening to take action over wage issues. Following is an industry-wide update on developments.
GLASS INDUSTRY
6,000 workers in the glass industry entered into the second day of their strike action on Monday. The strike commenced on Friday over wage increases.
Unions are demanding an 8% salary increase, while the offer by the Glass Industries Employers' Association (Giea) is 5%.
Trade unions taking part in the strike include Solidarity, the Chemical, Energy, Paper, Printing, Wood and Allied Workers Union (Ceppawu), General Industry Workers Union (Giwu) and the South African Chemical Workers Union (Sacwu).
Attempts by I-Net Bridge to obtain comment from Consol Glass, Nampak Limited (NPK) and the PG Group were unsuccessful.
