The award identifies companies or organizations that have contributed positively to the San Diego-area environment through innovative projects that reduce air pollution and global warming.
Solar Gard’s commitment to sustainability is evident through the energy saving architectural solar control window films it manufactures, which are scientifically proven to be carbon negative, as well as its company-wide environmental initiatives. These products and programs have made the company stand out among its peers in San Diego.
Highlights of Solar Gard’s environmental initiatives to decrease their carbon output include:
• First and only window film company to obtain an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for its products and prove they have a net positive impact on the environment. An EPD is a globally-recognized reporting tool providing a complete assessment of the environmental impact associated with a product’s manufacture and usage.
• Recycling program where 56 percent of materials were diverted from landfills and resulted in significant environmental savings including 331,331 Kilowatt hours of electricity and 530,758 gallons of water over the course of a year.
• ISO 14001 Certification since 2008, ensuring the company’s commitment to comply with applicable environmental regulations and explore new ways to continually reduce environmental impacts.
“Being recognized for our positive impact on the environment locally here in San Diego is a great achievement for Solar Gard,” said Kathryn Giblin, Director of Global Marketing and Technical Services, Solar Gard. “As the manufacturer of energy saving products, it is important that we not only help others reduce their carbon footprint, but employ our own environmentally responsible and sustainable practices.”
The APCD – IEA Blue Sky Leadership Award recognizes the most significant environmental accomplishments of local businesses in a challenging regulatory environment. The San Diego Air Pollution Control District partnered with the Industrial Environmental Association to create the award in 2009, which has grown to include categories for small, medium and large businesses.
