Scotland's new hub for innovation and sustainability

Date: 2 June 2014

Scotland’s energy minister has officially opened a new facility created by leading fenestration contractor CMS Window Systems, which provides architects and specifiers with easy access to some of the most advanced energy-saving products available to deliver thermally efficient, sustainable, secure homes and buildings.   The GLASSOLUTIONS Saint-Gobain team at the CMS Innovation Hub, with Andy Kerr (2nd from right), MD of CMS Window Systems.

"Arial">GLASSOLUTIONS Saint-Gobain is proud to be one of eight founding partners within the 10,000 sq ft Innovation Hub which was officially opened last week by Fergus Ewing MSP, Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Tourism.

The facility, which is located at CMS's headquarters and manufacturing facility in North Lanarkshire is a first for Scotland. It will showcase a range of products, from windows and doors to wall insulation and heat pumps, all of which clearly demonstrate a key role in delivering high levels of thermal insulation, reducing energy consumption, improving security and offering a creative dimension to 21st century buildings.

A wide variety of exterior and interior glass products feature in a Saint-Gobain zone within the Innovation Hub, all of which are available to CMS Window Systems customers via GLASSOLUTIONS.  These include EcoClear sealed units which are fitted as standard in all PVC-U windows and doors produced by CMS Window Systems.

Andy Kerr, managing director of CMS Window Systems said: “The Innovation Hub is the realisation of an ambition that started on day one, when we started manufacturing back in 2006, and it’s a proud moment to see the facility open.  Architects, builders, developers and social housing specifiers can explore for the first time - under one roof - a superb range of advanced building materials that we are proud to put our name to and genuinely support the sustainability agenda.

"If you specify CMS products you can have the confidence that any extracted materials will be passed through our recycling facilities ensuring no recyclable waste is sent to landfill.  A life cycle analysis of the CMS 0.8 U-value window, completed by Caledonian University, showed the Carbon payback time of as little as 9.5 months.”

“We partner only with the very best product manufacturers, like Saint-Gobain, and it is only right that our customers should have easy access to the components that make up their windows, doors and facades in a truly transparent supply chain.”

Mike Butterick, marketing director for GLASSOLUTIONS Saint-Gobain said: “We are proud to support CMS Window Systems in their quest to promote the importance of improving the energy efficiency and security of homes. This ethos is at the core of our business too, with our ongoing commitment to developing ever higher performing glass products which make a significant contribution to reducing carbon emissions, improving home comfort and preventing burglary.”

Scottish energy minister Fergus Ewing MSP officially opened the Innovation Hub at a VIP event in which he praised CMS Window Systems for their dedication to helping improve the quality and energy efficiency of the country’s housing stock and providing much-needed jobs for young people.

In addition to EcoClear sealed units, the Saint-Gobain zone within the Innovation Hub also features Contraflam fire-resistant glass, SageGlass electrochromic glass for controllable solar shading in public and commercial buildings and Stadip Silence for enhanced noise reduction inside properties. It also showcases a range of interior and decorative products including Vitrio back-painted glass and Tex Glass, which is a glass product with fabric interlayers encapsulated inside.
