Early coated energy-efficient glass brand still contributes to today’s sustainable building – PPG Industries (NYSE: PPG) is commemorating the 50th anniversary of SOLARBAN(R) glass, a product line that was launched in 1964 under a name that continues to serve as the flagship brand for one of the most advanced lines of solar control, low-emissivity (low-e) glasses.   To mark the gold anniversary of Solarban glass, PPG is hosting a retrospective of modern and historic buildings constructed with Solarban products, both online at www.SolarbanGlassLegacy.com and at major industry trade shows through the end of 2014.Highlights include one of the first installations of Solarban glass on the Mutual of Omaha Regional Office Building in Miami (now Colonnade Plaza), which was designed by famed Twin Towers architect Minoru Yamasaki, as well as buildings designed by Philip Johnson, SOM, HOK, Fentress, AC Martin, Paul Rudolph, I.M.

Pei and other architectural leaders.

The website and expositions will celebrate the prominence of Solarban glass on many of the country’s most iconic skylines and in work by the industry’s most respected architectural firms. Advances in environmental glass technology associated with PPG and Solarban glass from the 1930s through today also will be featured.

When it was introduced 50 years ago, Solarban glass presaged the contemporary sustainable building movement by being one of the first coated glasses to reflect heat away from buildings, improving occupant comfort and reducing utility expenses related to HVAC (heating, ventilation and airconditioning) systems. Since that time, the Solarban family of products has been continually expanded and refined to meet the aesthetic and energy efficiency demands of architects and building owners.

Over the past half-century, developments associated with Solarban glass have ushered in significant advances in architectural glass performance. In 1983, 19 years after launching heat-reflective Solarban glass, PPG debuted its first low-e glasses made with the magnetron-sputtered vacuum deposition (MSVD) coating process. That coating technology, which continues to serve as the platform for the highest-performing low-e coated glasses available today, enabled the development of Solarban 60 glass, introduced by PPG in 1989, and the creation of Solarban 70XL glass, the world’s first triple-silver-coated, solar control, low-e glass, introduced by PPG in 2005.
