The new Audi A3, launched in May, features a complex rear light from Pilkington. The unique rear light, which includes four antennae connectors, is being manufactured in Witten and the rear quarter and front door glasses are being made in San Salvo.
The back and the rear quarter lights are assembled and encapsulated by a sub-supplier in Germany.
"It is a challenging contract for several reasons," said technical marketing manager Michael Schaaf. "As first tier supplier we also have to oversee the sub-supplier's operation. Also, although the back light is not a particularly complex shape, the high number of antennae and the very demanding tolerances mean that we must use the very latest, state-of-the-art press-bending technology to achieve the required result."
