Kopp Glass, Inc. announces successful development of two low weight, high transmission, White LED-compatible, NVIS glass Formulations.

K0321.jpg" alt="" />Kopp Glass, Inc., the world’s leading ISO 9001:2008 certified manufacturer of precision molded, technical glass products announced today their successful development of two low weight, high transmission, White LED-compatible, NVIS glass formulations.

The new formulations were designed for use in the aerospace market to be compatible with Night Vision Imaging Systems (NVIS). Products made from these compositions can be used in civilian or military aircraft to function as annunciators, indicators, and cockpit display light filters.

The development of K0321 (0.5 mm application thickness) and K0323 (1.0 mm application thickness) was in response to customer demands for lower weight, LED-compatible, high transmission, NVIS filter options. The newest designs allow for the wall thickness of historical LED-compatible filter products to be decreased by 33% to 67%.

“As there is so much focus in the aerospace industry on weight reduction efforts, Kopp was willing to accept the challenge of developing compositions that could provide thinner designs for filter material. We welcomed the opportunity to develop formulations, that in addition to meeting civilian and military specifications, would meet our customer’s and their end user’s expectations”. - Matt Bogart, Senior Glass Scientist

The formulations were designed so that both cast glass and molded forms could be produced. “Cast blanks seem to be our customer’s favorite method of ordering NVIS material as it can be further processed by drilling, routing, cutting, grinding, and other machining processes. However, we didn’t want to limit the form or fashion that our customers had to order by. We didn’t want to rule out the possibility of our customers wanting to have custom shapes and sizes molded to their specification”. - Rob Diana, Operations Manager
