Li’s contributions to glass science and technology are widely recognized,” said Paul Westbrook, PPG science and technology director for fiber glass. “His research on the network structure of aluminosilicate glass was instrumental in the development and commercialization of INNOFIBER(R) high-modulus fiber glass from PPG.”
Li holds 20 patents and prior to joining PPG in 2000, his research in nepheline discrimination at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory led to the current standard composition formulation benchmark used for vitrification of high-level radioactive nuclear waste at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site and Hanford Site, known commonly in the field of nuclear waste management and environmental restoration as the “Li Criterion.”
Li serves as a technical referee for numerous peer-reviewed journals, and he is a member of the editorial board of New Journal of Glass and Ceramics. He has served as chair of the Glass and Optical Materials Division of ACerS and has served on many glass science and technology award committees since 2006. Currently, Li is a council member of the International Commission on Glass. Additionally, he was recently inducted as a “PPG Distinguished Colleague” into the PPG Collegium, which recognizes employees demonstrating distinguished and sustained contributions to the technological advancement of the company.
“To be named an ACerS Fellow is one of the highest honors in my field,” Li said. “I am honored to be able work in a field that provides me the opportunity to have such a huge impact on people’s lives.”
