Edgetech I.G. and LMI Custom Mixing Commit to Five-Year Investment in YMCA Revitalization

The $5.5 million YMCA “Capital Campaign for Kids” was initiated in 2006 to turn the old high school into a place where youth and adults of the community could go for educational and recreational programs.

“They have done an amazing job so far turning the old high school into a state-of-the-art recreational facility for the community,” said Mike Hovan, President of Edgetech I.G. “The YMCA is an invaluable part of our community, and the new facility is already providing a nice, safe place for children of all ages to gather, learn and exercise.

“We were proud to be part of the initial campaign,” added Jim Nixon, General Manager for LMI Custom Mixing. “Now, we look forward to watching the next phases of the project come to fruition.”

Edgetech and LMI donated $20,000 from 2006 to 2007, and just recently decided to continue investing in the future of the YMCA. On behalf of the companies, Hovan and Nixon presented the first installment toward the new Capital Campaign at a small ceremony on April 22. Accepting the check were Lynne Jones, YMCA Development Foundation Secretary, and James S. Cowin, Executive Director.

“The local Lauren International companies have been so generous in the past and we are very grateful that they are continuing to invest in the Cambridge community through our YMCA programs,” Cowin said. “We have more than doubled our membership over the past three years and expanded all of our programs. We could never have done it without generous donations, such as this, from local companies and individuals.”

So far, the old high school library has been transformed into the “Healthy Living Center,” which features an adult fitness center, child watch and new restrooms. What was once the cafeteria is now a multi-use space that has been home to pot-luck dinners, dances and public meetings. The old gym was transformed as well, and now houses gymnastics equipment and basketball courts, and is also used regularly for indoor soccer and volleyball.

The downstairs features a Youth Center that is busy on nights and weekend, according to Jones. “We have pool tables, ping pong, foosball, television, snack bar and ‘Dance, Dance Revolution,’ among other things,” Jones said. “We have programs for adults and children of all ages.”

In addition to youth and adult exercise programs, the Cambridge YMCA offers a variety of educational opportunities, including music and art, as well as GED courses through its partnership with the Adult Basic Literacy Education (ABLE) program. Future plans for the YMCA include construction of a new building to connect the two structures, which will include new locker rooms, a main entrance, and serve as the gateway to the new Aquatics Center.
