Approximately 130 architects, builders and window fabricators gathered in Dubai on January 21 to learn  more about the global benefits of high-performance glazing and the role of silicone technologies, including spacers, in sustainable insulating glass design.

Edgetech I.G., along with Dow Corning, presented at the “Glass Façade: Green Building Design” symposium hosted by the Dubai Municipality.

The presentations focused on using the latest silicone technologies for commercial facades and their significance to energy efficiency, sustainability and waste reduction.  Regional case studies and other global projects including LEED® certified projects were discussed.

Edgetech’s structural silicone foam spacer has long been  know as the premier warm edge spacer for colder climates of the world, but all climates, including the Middle East, are increasingly embracing  the extended benefits that flexible silicone spacer provides in the way of  flexible design, energy savings, long term durability and waste reduction.

“Dubai is known throughout the world for its passion for architecture and adoption of sustainable building practices,” Erb said. “It was an honor to speak to local building professionals and to expand their knowledge of structural silicone foam spacer. Working with Dow Corning was also a great experience as the engineered design of silicone foam Super Spacer® TriSeal™ is complemented well by their silicone sealants.”

Erb’s presentation titled “Exceeding Expectations for IG” walked attendees through the history of silicone foam spacer warm edge technology, uses of warm edge in different climate areas, industry efficiency standards, Super Spacer TriSeal’s structural testing numbers and an overview of the IG manufacturing process. Jean Paul Hautekeer, European Construction Industry Commercial Director, from Dow Corning then took the floor to discuss how silicone sealants and the reduced metal Super Spacer TriSeal improve thermal performance and the overall carbon footprint of the building envelope when used together.

“We received excellent feedback,” Erb said. “The presentations were concluded with productive conversations aimed at furthering availability and use of silicone foam spacer technology in Dubai. Many new relationships were formed and we look forward to expanding our partnerships in this growing, dynamic area of the world.”

Another part of the symposium’s goals was to discuss LEED certification as the Dubai Municipality is developing a similar program of its own. According to Erb, Edgetech will actively seek ways to continue educating architects, builders and fabricators on the many benefits of incorporating Super Spacer TriSeal into their designs.
