Two solar plants finalise deals before end of week deadline, as details emerge of bankrupt Solyndra's whistling robotsThe US Department of Energy (DoE) finalised two loan guarantees worth a combined $1bn yesterday, as scrutiny over its backing for now-bankrupt solar company Solyndra continued to intensify.

The high-profile loan programme ends on Friday, and the government is taking steps to close some $9bn worth of deals and yesterday agreed a $337m loan guarantee to the Mesquite Solar 1 project and a $737m loan guarantee to support Tonopah Solar Energy's pioneering Crescent Dunes project.
