Accustomed to measuring success by the numbers, and faithful to the Latin motto: “Homo faber fortunae suae”, [Man is the artisan of his fate], a man with innate insight and business sense, as well as a long-range vision of the dynamics of the global economy, Dino Fenzi leaves a great legacy also as brilliant promoter of key initiatives in the area of trade associations and fairs.Just as he became President of Vitrum upon its founding in 1979, he was also the first President of Gimav, a post he held from 1980 to 1990, when he became its Honorary President. At the helm of Gimav and Vitrum he made significant contributions to the international success of Italian-made products in the glass processing industry, transforming the superior technology offered by Italy’s enterprises into a global trademark, thanks to his unremitting efforts to identify and open up new markets and new sales possibilities. If Italy’s glass industry currently holds a position of firmly-established international leadership, it is due at least in part to 30 years of endeavor by Dino Fenzi, who knew how to turn his enormous talent to profit, first in the family business and then, with the same passionate drive, in the other Gimav-member firms that were able to flourish and make a name for themselves in the global marketplace.
Naturally, he also leaves a healthy wake of regrets, because it is hard for everyone, even the associations (made up of men and women, with beating hearts and thinking minds), to take leave of the iconic figures who left their own stamp on the great transformations of which they were also the architects.
And so, as Dino Fenzi often said, “despite everything, the world keeps turning”, Vitrum moves ahead at a steady pace along the pathway that leads directly to its October 2015 date with the world of glass. In the driver’s seat is the new President, Aldo Faccenda, member of the Board of Directors of Bottero SpA, the first company in Italy and the world to offer expertise and high technology in all areas of glass processing.
We asked Aldo Faccenda for some initial thoughts on his new responsibilities and commitments in preparation for Vitrum 2015: “Vitrum is a perfectly organized and efficient machine; I will focus my energies on continuing the fine job my predecessor has accomplished until now. We started off at full throttle, without skipping a beat: at Glasstec we are prepared to add some significant tiles to the mosaic that will become Vitrum 2015.”
