Opaque glass coatings: scratch resistant & silicone bonding

I am interested in a glass coating (preferably self applied) that will:

1. Bond very well to float glass
2. Becomes very hard and scratch resistant when cured
3. Able to withstand sustained submersion in water when fully cured
4. Will bond to silicone extremely well
5. Available in a variety of colors
6. Available in the USA

Ceramic Frit
Opaci-coat
Color Coat - various mfg

only ceramic frit will meet all of your requirement. There are some other methods employed by artist, but the price point is much higher than ceramic frit and not sure if they meet your scratch resistant requirement.

My best solution would be fully opaque flat glass (not using any coatings). I have been unable to procure such an item. Does anyone know of a sourse/supplier?

Hello Ocean,

Glasskote will not meet your goals. It is very similiar to an epoxy polyurethane based product. The best and hardest opaque color product that I know of is Glaverbel's Lacobel product. Very Hard. I sell several opaque color products, and by far, the Lacobel is the hardest and most durable of the products I sell.

Just an update to set the record straight. I think it is unfortunate that vendors express opinions on other people's products without being informed. Luckily, products general speak for themselves. I believe Ocean has done testing on his own, and if you'd like to know his opinion as to the suitability of GlassKote for his application and the testing he has done on other products - just ask him :-)

I guess you are talking about me. I am not sure what opinion you are referring to regarding my comments. Ocean wanted a color coated product that is extremely hard and resistant to scratching. The only color coating product that meets that bill is ceramic frit. Ceramic Frit is a very small part of my business. A overwhelming majority of my sales is with cold process color coating techniques. Additionally, there are many many ceramic frit fabricators in North America. Thus, by steering him towards ceramic frit products I am actually decreasing my opportunities to make a sale.

Hi Beau,

I was surprised that you expressed such a strong opinion about a product that you don't sell and have not tested. I am not going to discuss the merits or drawbacks of any products here - because I think all products have their place. The right selection really depends upon the application, and anyone looking to use a product should do their own testing and comparisons in my opinion.

I think it is prudent to have "hands on" experience (and do some real testing) with a given product before expressing an opinion in a public forum. I think you might have been surprised if you had tested GlassKote.

In any event, I don't want to make a big deal out of this. I just felt it was important that people conduct their own tests and make their own judgments. In the end, each product stands on its own merits.

I have been selling various Australian based and derived color coating systems for 4 years. None of them claim scratch resistance. The only color coated system that makes such a claim is ceramic frit. This is why I made the statement I made. My statements are based on testing the material myself (boil, dishwashing test), review of the technical and marketing literature, and review of numerous lab reports.

Interesting discussion everyone and I would agree that each product has it's place for sure. Does anyone know the relative applied cost of the 3 or 4 options mentioned here? Particularly, opaci vs. frit vs. glasskote.

Did you try PYROLYTIC CHROMIUM CARBIDE COATING?

If you need a wear-resistant coating, I should say it is the best coating solution you can find for reasonable price.
