I have been told before that safety glass was tempered glass and vice versa. But recently someone told me that safety glass was different from tempered glass. Is this true? If so, what are the main differences between the two? Thank you in advance for your help.
Both fully tempered and laminated glass are considered to be safety glass. HS and chemically strengthened glass are not safety glass in accordance with NA standards ANSI Z97 & CAN CGSB. Laminated glass, of course is the true safety glass in that it will generally stay in the opening after being impacted
Tempered glass and laminated glass are both called "safety glass" in the UK
Other countries using differentlanguages may have more distinctive names for both products so there may not be a generic "safety glass" name covering both products
Laminated glass may be made using film or resin as the interlayer.
The first safety glass was resin laminated and it was invented over 100 years ago.

It all comes down to the question of semantics. I have always thought that safety glass can be regarded as tempered ones but it may not be the same for people from other industries and they often mix laminated safety glass with tempered ones. I agree with Edward's definition. Thanks a bunch.

Actually, safety glass consists of tempered glass, laminated glass, tempered insulated glass, etc.
Many types. As long as the glass will do no harm to human beings, it can be called as safety glass.
