Vitro Keeps in Consolidating Its Sustainability Efforts

“Our commitment to the future” is the fifth annual sustainable development report from the leading glass manufacturer, issued according to the Global Report Initiative (GRI) methodology and presenting a solid A+ application level.

San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo León, Mexico, June 18, 2011 – Vitro S.A.B. de C.V., leading glass manufacturer in Mexico, released its Sustainable Development Report 2011, which accounts for the actions, accomplishments and goals achieved during the past year on business ethics, environmental care, and the promotion of continuous development in the communities where the company operates.The report – that is carried out for the fifth consecutive year- shows the highest reporting level in accordance to the methodology established by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), with an A+ application level, which was certified by an independent third party.With this, Vitro reiterates its commitment to achieve a full and balanced growth based on sustainable development.



“The importance and size of Vitro, not only impacts the economic and business sector, nationally and internationally. Its large scale entails numerous responsibilities and commitments, which it meets through the implementation of programs and actions that seek to positively influence on social and environmental surroundings, repaying part of the benefits achieved as a company”, said Hugo A. Lara Garcia, CEO Vitro.



The results presented in the 2011 report consolidate Vitro’s Sustainable Development Model, which is based on three fundamental pillars that set the tone for each one of its efforts: Responsible Corporate Management, Sound Human Attitude, and Viable Environment.



Among the most notable achievements in 2011, is the record number registered in glass recycling, which reached 192,506 tons of recovered material, exceeding the 181,438 tons collected in 2010.



Also, as part of its commitment to the preservation and protection of the environment, Vitro supports the conservation of more than 1,023 wildlife species through Organización Vida Silvestre (OVIS). In addition, throughout the year, Vitro continued its reforestation efforts, with nearly 54,000 trees planted in rural and urban areas.



According to its socially responsible philosophy, one of Vitro ́s priorities is giving back to the communities where the company operates part of the benefits obtained from the different activities and businesses it develops. Thus, the number of students enrolled in the four institutions of Formación Educativa (FEAC) amounted to 1,524 students; in health, 18,465 medical consultations related to patients linked to Vitro and the community were registered; and, regarding to leisure activities, about 58,000 visitors were received in the cultural and recreational areas managed by Vitro.



For Roberto Riva Palacio, Corporate Communications and Social Responsibility Manager at Vitro, safety and protection within their facilities is a priority in the company, for which they are constantly reinforcing measures to ensure safe workplaces. “During 2011 there was a decrease of 7.69 percent of accidents in comparison to 2010, reflecting the effectiveness of the protocols we have adopted in this issue”.



Also, the results of the Company’s Sustainable Development Model have been widely recognized by several organizations as well as national and international institutions. Among the awards received are the Sustainable Company Seal (Sello Empresa Sustentable) by the Mexican Stock Exchange (Bolsa Mexicana de Valores); the ESR (Socially Responsible Company) (Empresa Socialmente Responsible), the Best CSR Practice (Mejor Práctica de RSE) and the Transfer of Corporate Social Responsibility in the Value Chain (Transferencia de Responsabilidad Social Empresarial a la Cadena de Valor), the of them by the Mexican Center for Philanthropy (Centro Mexicano para la Filantropía); and the Best Places to Work (Mejores Empresas para Trabajar), from the Great Place to Work Institute, as well as Enviromental Performance (Desempeño Ambiental) by the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Procuraduria Federal de Proteccion al Ambiente).
