Sell yearly over 165,000 square meters more of quality float glass - Unbeatable cost-efficiency using online thickness measurement

Date: 11 August 2014

Float glass manufacturers have to keep a close eye on the material thickness at all times. The product has to meet the exact criteria customers have specified.

Also, raw material is very valuable and must be used efficiently.  The waste of even the tiniest bits directly results in financial loss. Thanks to tireless research and a tremendous innovative force, ISRA has developed the be all and end all  solution for vast production efficiency improvements. With sophisticated technology, FLOATSCAN-Hotgauge uncovers ultimate savings potentials in a way that previously would have been considered impossible. Calculations based on actual user statistics show float glass lines without FLOATSCAN-Hotgauge are actually more expensive than those integrating the system.

Glass thickness and ribbon width hide big savings potentials. The key to activate them is a continuous precise measurement of these attributes. A detailed data record it is the prerequisite for optimizing thickness changes and subsequently improving the production tonnage. For this reason, FLOATSCAN-Hotgauge is already being used by major global players in over 50 float lines around the world. Thanks to a close partnership with its customers, ISRA regularly receives statistics and usage data from the companies. The following calculation is based on the great results users already achieve with FLOATSCAN-Hotgauge.

If the thickness is only optimized by an average 0.1 mm, an additional output of more than 80,000 m² float glass can be reached each year. Improving width by 5 mm saves about 35,000 m² per year. Adjusting the thickness-profile by only 0.005 mm saves an annual 40,500 m² approximately. Altogether, this results in an annual increase of about 165,000 m², or in other words: 1,200 more tons. Thus, the Return on Investment is reached within a fast span of only 4 months. The system is robust and has only low maintenance requirements. From an economic standpoint, there really is no reason not to use it!

FLOATSCAN-Hotgauge is installed at the earliest possible position, just behind the tin bath. This way, it is possible to change thickness within shortest times, saving money due to fast reactions. Measurements are based on an innovative and proven technology. During each cycle, the sensor head crosses the entire glass ribbon to perform an optical and µm-precise measurement. The image in reflection of both glass surfaces permits to calculate the glass thickness based on the refraction index. Measurements are as fast as 300 mm/sec.

The Graphical User Interface (GUI) presents a multitude of statistics that serve as a basis to optimize processes. Data is visualized as color-coded map in real time for quickest reaction time. In short, the online glass thickness measuring system FLOATSCAN-Hotgauge is a must-have. Always remember it’s more expensive without it!
