Glass that uses daylight to keep itself clean is one of the finalists for the coveted MacRobert engineering award. Pilkington Activ glass is covered in a very thin coating of microcrystalline titanium dioxide which breaks down dirt when the sun shines on it.
The idea is that the dirt will then be washed away by rainwater.
The daylight-cleaning glass could be developed commercially for windows etc if it manages to scoop the Royal Academy of Engineerings top prize.
