Along with things like phones and cars, you can now add windows to the growing list of “smart” devices.
But what exactly is a smart window?“Very simply, it’s a window that changes tinting to allow more control of energy and sunlight coming in and out of a building,” says Chris Raczowski, chief operations officer at RavenBrick, a Denver-based firm at the forefront of smart window technology. The U.S.Energy Information Administration estimates commercial and residential buildings accounted for 40 percent of the total energy consumption in the U.S. last year — to the tune of about 40 quadrillion British thermal units.
So when RavenBrick claims its windows can reduce a building’s energy use by up to 30 percent, the potential savings in both cost and natural resources can be substantial.
